Have Arsenal Ever Been Relegated From The Premier League? Preview
Together with Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, and Everton, Arsenal is one of just six teams in the history of the Premier League to never be relegated. They have, however, previously been demoted from the English Football First Division.
Here, we take a deep historical look at the sad event of Arsenal’s 1912–13 season-long banishment to the Second Division. Even though Arsenal had some success following its founding as Dial Square in 1886, it was not financially viable since Manor Ground, where they played at the time, was too small to generate a sizable revenue stream from ticket sales. It had been a fruitless attempt to leave Manor Ground behind.
They moved to the Invicta Ground in 1890, but because the rent there was too high, they had to return in 1893. Over the next few seasons, Arsenal’s on-field results deteriorated along with their financial predicament, and they gradually fell the First Division standings.
The group of investors led by real estate mogul Henry Norris prevented the club from going bankrupt when it entered voluntary liquidation in 1910. To help with the finances, Norris obtained planning permission for a bigger stadium that would eventually be called Highbury.
Although Arsenal’s ascent to superstardom was aided by the transfer to Highbury, it was too little, too late in the short run. Arsenal was demoted to the Second Division after finishing bottom of the First Division in 1912–13, winning just three games during the season.
For those who supported the Gunners, it was a sobering moment. They too did not recover right after, finishing third in their subsequent season. They would have to wait another year to attempt to be promoted back to the top level, as only the top two teams in the Second Division would be awarded promotions at that point.
They were able to rejoin the First Division in 1914–15. Even though they placed fifth, two spots lower than their 1913–14 season total, they were re-elected to the top division in English football. Arsenal has never experienced another relegation since.
