After the News broke out of Lionel Messi joining MLS side Inter Miami, many fans and footballing pundits have raised concerns about Messi’s International Career in the Future. We at Alley Sport are here to cover Has Messi Retired? Lionel Messi has won more titles than any other player in the annals of world football.
Has Messi Retired? Preview
The 2026 World Cup will take place in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Lionel Messi, who will soon play for Inter Miami, has informed Chinese media source Titan Sports that he would not participate. When he led his nation to victory in Qatar 2022, Messi finally won the one big trophy that had evaded him throughout his great career.
Many supporters believed the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner had “completed football” after captaining La Albiceleste to a thrilling penalty shootout victory over the previous champions France. As he said on Tuesday, Messi, who is 35 years old, has opted to retire from international competition for FIFA with a victory.
When asked if he thought he would play in 2026, Messi responded, “I think not.” My last World Cup was this one. I’ll wait and see how things turn out, but I won’t be attending the next World Cup in principle, he continued. Messi stated that he “is not going to participate” in the competition in 2026 but would “like to be there to watch.”
Given that Messi would most likely continue to reside in Miami if all goes according to plan in the MLS, this may be readily handled. Messi will sign a two-and-a-half-year deal with Inter, which is co-owned by David Beckham, according to The Miami Herald. There is also an option to extend the deal until 2026.
Messi is ready to help Argentina defend their Copa America title in the next edition of the event, which will also be hosted on American territory in the summer of 2024. Despite opting not to play in the next World Cup on the verge of his 39th birthday, Messi looks set to aid Argentina at the next World Cup.
Similar to the World Cup, when he lost to Germany in the final in 2014, Messi had many defeats at the Copa America by failing to cross the finish line three times before beating winners Brazil in the Maracana in 2021. Messi will leave the Argentina squad permanently as the all-time leader in both goals and appearances after earning his first cap in 2005 as a young Barcelona player.
So Lionel Messi has technically Retired from the World Cup Tournament as he has mentioned himself, but he’ll definitely be playing the next Copa America Tournament in 2024 and will be playing Club Football at Inter Miami.
