Lothar Matthaus, Miroslav Klose, Gerd Muller, Philipp Lahm, Thomas Muller, and Rudi Voller are a few examples of players who have excelled for their nation on the international stage, yet none of them has ever participated in a Premier League match. We could look at the most productive of the more than 60 German nationals who have played in England’s top flight.
Since Matthias Breitkreutz made his Premier League debut for Aston Villa in a December 1992 match against Manchester City, 69 players have participated. In March 1994, Man City’s Uwe Rosler became the very first German to score in the tournament.
A few weeks later, Jurgen Klinsmann signed for Tottenham Hotspur and made his debut for the club by scoring the game-winning goal in an exciting 4-3 victory at Sheffield Wednesday. He also displayed his infamous dive celebration. One player shines out above the rest in terms of assists, contributing 54 in all, and that player is Mesut Ozil. Only Thierry Henry, who assisted 20 goals in 2002/03, had more assists in a single season (19 in 2015/16).
With four more goals than Klinsmann and Rosler combined, Ozil also owns the record for most German goals scored in a single match. Michael Ballack and Dietmar Hamann were two midfielders who established themselves in the Premier League before Mesut Ozil joined in September 2013.
With 268 games played for Newcastle United, Liverpool, and Man City, Hamann is second all-time in the list of German players who have appeared after Robert Huth. Ballack was indeed a one-club guy in the league, and his toughness, composure, and experience aided Chelsea came out on top in 2009–10.
