While pre-season summer friendlies will help to determine many opening-weekend line-ups, The Scout has selected an initial squad to help Fantasy bosses looking to build the basis of their teams ahead of the Gameweek 1 deadline of 18:30 BST on 13 August. The Scout’s 15-man squad costs exactly £100.0m, with Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) given the captain’s armband and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) named vice-captain.

FPL Gameweek 1: Best Players

Robert Sanchez (BHA) £4.5m: Brighton & Hove Albion’s No 1 faces only two of last season’s top nine sides in the first eight Gameweeks.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (LIV) £7.5m: Four of Liverpool’s first six matches score only two in the Fixture Difficulty Ratings (FDR).

Lucas Digne (EVE) £5.5m: Nine assists and nine clean sheets last season highlight his potential for points at both ends of the pitch.

Wesley Fofana (LEI) £4.5m: He offers a cut-price route into the Leicester City defence.

Mohamed Salah (LIV) £12.5m: The Egyptian will be a major captaincy contender for Liverpool’s kind early schedule.

Bruno Fernandes (MUN) £12.0m: He was the top-scoring player in 2020/21 Fantasy, combining 18 goals and 14 assists to total 244 points.

Bukayo Saka (ARS) £6.5m: Arsenal’s winger faces promoted pair Brentford and Norwich City in the first four Gameweeks.

Ismaila Sarr (WAT) £6.0m: The Watford winger’s 13 goals, 86 shots and 57 shots inside the penalty area were all team-leading totals last term.

Ollie Watkins (AVL) £7.5m: The Aston Villa forward faces Watford, Newcastle United and Brentford in the first three Gameweeks.

Kelechi Iheanacho (LEI) £7.5m: His 50 shots, 23 shots on target and 24 chances created all ranked among the top two forwards from Gameweek 22 onwards last season.

Ivan Toney (BRE) £6.5m: The Brentford talisman faces only one of last season’s top 10 in the opening five Gameweeks.

Substitutes

Jason Steele (BHA) £4.0m: Brighton’s back-up goalkeeper can deputise off the bench if Sanchez is ruled out.

Raphinha (LEE) £6.5m: His potential for goals and assists can establish the Leeds United winger as a must-have at just £6.5m.

Charlie Taylor (BUR) £4.5m: Burnley’s left-back provides a strong rotation partner for Francisco Sierralta (£4.5m) over the opening Gameweeks.

Francisco Sierralta (WAT) £4.5m: The Chilean established himself as a key figure under head coach Xisco Munoz last term.

As the FPL game grows in popularity, reaching one of those coveted top 10k finishes is becoming increasingly more challenging: in fact the top 50k has now become a more realistic target, or even the top 1%.

With the wealth of information now on offer for fantasy managers, it’s strategy where you are most likely to get an edge over your rivals now.

1. Balance of Big Hitters, FPL 2021/22 Gameweek 1 Squad

Every season I fall into the same trap of selecting one too many big hitters for Gameweek 1. I can’t help seeing my team as a big jigsaw, with a Wishlist in tow and a desire to tick off almost every single element. I must follow my own advice this campaign, and not overdo the number of big hitters in my side. It’s my most important tip for the FPL season ahead.

This season we seem to have a severe lack of options when it comes to premium strikers, with just Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Jamie Vardy (£10.5m) priced over the £10m mark. Therefore, I find it might be much easier to achieve this campaign!

2. Key Captaincy Contenders, FPL 2021/22 Gameweek 1 Squad

Tip number two is intrinsically linked to tip number one: during the very early stages of the season, it’s important to select the reliable big name players as your captain for the opening gameweeks. For this reason, having two or three big hitters who are reliable captaincy candidates on a weekly basis and reasonably fixture proof, should stand you in good stead.

Ownership has to come into those considerations too: at the time of writing, there’s a pool of big names dominating the “Team selected by %” metric. Mohamed Salah, Bruno Fernandes, Harry Kane and Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) are those with significant ownership from the traditional big six clubs. You would expect those names to dominate the most captained statistics across the opening weeks.

3. Timing those Transfers, FPL 2021/22 Gameweek 1 Squad

Transfers and points hits are key elements within the game and getting those decisions and more crucially the timing right, can save you points over the course of the season. I’m an advocate of making transfers as close to the deadline as possible.

Traditionally, press conferences for a standard FPL Gameweek take place up until 5pm UK time on a Friday. For that reason, I usually make my transfers on a Friday evening or Saturday morning ahead of the deadline. That strategy works best as you have a full picture surrounding injuries and availability.
