The year of 2021 saw some interesting shift in the footballing elite, with the likes of Ronaldo and Messi being sidelined by a new wave of emerging superstars. A year hit by the pandemic, yet, failed to disrupt the beauty of football, which has seen some wonderful goals and moments through out the season, with a mind-boggling transfer season changing the face of modern football.
Footballer with the most goals in 2021
Bayern Munich’s Polish superstar, Robert Lewandowski, ends the calendar year as the “Footballer with the most goals in 2021”. The Polish striker scored his 69th goal against Wolfsburg in Bundesliga’s last game of the year, which put on him level with Cristiano Ronaldo’s tally of 69 goals with Real Madrid in 2013. The most ever goals scored in a year belongs to Lionel Messi, scoring 91 goals in 2012.

Lewandowski has overtaken Gerd Mueller of the most goals scored in a calendar year of the Bundesliga, as he managed to score his 43rd goal in Bundesliga in 2021. He overtakes the great Gerd Mueller, who scored 41 goals in the year 1972. Lewandowski may not have won the Ballon D’Or, but would finally win an individual accolade with a Golden Boot to his name.
New Generation of Attackers
The Lionel Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo duopoly of winning the golden boot has come to an end, with the likes of Mohammed Salah, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland all coming up with loads of goals in their respective leagues. Another interesting name in the list of Fiorentina’s highly talented attacker, Dusan Vlahovic, who recently equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 33 goals in a Serie A calendar year.
Karim Benzema continues his majestic form, scoring 37 goals in 52 games for the Los Blancos. Cristiano Ronaldo has managed to score 33 goals in this calendar year, 1 less than his rival Lionel Messi, who has 34 goals to his name. Another interesting name in the list of top attackers is Ajax star Sebastian Haller, who managed 33 goals this year as well. (All updated till 1st of December).
