A spectacular festival of football comes to an end as Alley Sport discusses the European Golden Shoe and the potential candidates to win this prestigious award.
UEFA Euros 2020 was a spectacle of an event, a tournament which saw a lot of twists and turns, lots of goals, own goals, penalty misses and shoot outs as well as underdogs come to the forefront of the tournament. The European Golden Shoe award is given to the player with the most goals and goal contributions at the end of the tournament, with Antoinne Griezmann lifting the award for his goals in the 2016 edition, scoring 6 goals to lift this honor.

European Golden Shoe Race Leaders: Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest footballer of all time, and his age defies his play, as he leads the scoring charts again with 5 goals and 1 assist. Portugal were tasked with facing strong sides like France, Germany and underdogs Hungary in the group stage. Cristiano Ronaldo was at his clinical best, scoring a wonderful brace against Hungary, scoring and creating the assist for Jota against Germany, and securing Portugal’s position in the Round of 16 with two penalties buried against the French.
European Golden Shoe Race Leaders: Patrik Schick
One of the upcoming talent for the tournament, Czech Republic’s Patrik Schick bamboozled the crowd with his brace against Scotland, which included a wonder goal from the half line, one of the goals of the tournament. He scored the opener against Croatia, and sealed the victory against the Dutch with a wonderful finish. Czech Republic were knocked out by Denmark in the quarterfinals, as Patrik Schick scored to reignite the comeback for the Czechs, however he has definitely attracted interest from major European clubs.

European Golden Shoe Race Leaders: Harry Kane
Harry Kane had a slow start to the tournament, but gathered pace with his beautiful goal against Germany, which saw England qualify for the quarterfinals. Harry Kane was at his best against Ukraine, scoring a brace to seal England’s semi final berth. Kane had multiple chances against Denmark in the semis, missed his penalty but scored the all important rebound which saw England reach the finals. A hat trick for Kane would see him win this award, after winning the golden boot in Russia for the World Cup.

European Golden Shoe Race Leaders: Raheem Sterling
Raheem Sterling has been the attacking star of the English campaign, scoring the winners against Croatia and Czech Republic showed that the star was brimming with confidence. Sterling was back on the scoresheet against the Germans, but failed to score against Ukraine. Sterling’s contribution in the Denmark game was significant, pressuring an own goal from the Danes, and winning the significant penalty for his compatriot Kane to score. Raheem Sterling is possibly one of the stars of the tournament, needs a assist and a brace to lift the award.
