England vs South Africa series cancelled
England were set to take on South Africa in a three match ODI series which has been postponed on medical grounds. This is mainly due to physical health and welfare of players from both the teams. Before the first ODI, a member of the South Africa team was tested positive and the match had to be postponed. The match was rearranged on Sunday but eventually had to be called off due to two more members of England’s squad testing positive.
The second ODI was in danger of getting postponed due to the increasing concerns of welfare and two results were yet to come. The ECB board owing to the medical concerns had to consider the welfare of the players which was the paramount and jointly made a decision with the South Africa cricket board to postpone the remaining matches in the series. The ECB board also thanked the the South Africa Cricket board for their support in these difficult pandemic times.
The players had to undergo protocols and the bio bubble has brought so many players withdrawing from a series due to the pandemic. The mental state of the players will certainly be affected and hence the right decision was made in postponing the series. The security arrangements will certainly be questioned and the protocols to keep the bubble virus free has to be reconsidered.
Huge loss to South Africa’s financial returns
South Africa cricket board will be losing a huge sum of money through the broadcasting rights and to add to their wounds, they are already in a spot of bother with their financial issues. A lot of money had been spent on the bio bubble and security of the players in the series and it will be really a shame to postpone the series. The players would have lost their faith in the bio bubble circuit now and this would certainly impact the upcoming series.
Nasser Hussain on Sky Sports mentioned that “When you think of the amount of money, effort, time to put up that secure bubble – well, it doesn’t seem quite so secure now – it’s obviously a massive, massive shame“. He also added “Everything that had to be put in place to get a tour like this on in Covid times – the players hanging around waiting to play, everyone at home waiting, everyone in South African cricket waiting with the money that they’re going to lose through broadcast rights, it’s a huge shame“.
