England however, faced struggles to reach Semi Finals as they won both of their last league games to qualify. England facing problems to reach semi finals is not something you expect from the tournament favourites.
Now, talking about the Semi final fixtures, we have 2 matches that are to take place on 9th and 11th of July, 2019. India is all set to play the first semi Final on 9th July in Manchester.
Semi Final 1 – India v/s New Zealand:
The league stage match between India and New Zealand was washed out due to rain. However, New Zealand got the better of the Indian team during warm up games. New Zealand’s opening partnership has failed miserably the whole World Cup and India would be eyeing to target them first. https://alleysport.com/2019/07/06/top-world-cup-moments/
The core of New Zealand’s batting Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor have showed class during the whole tournament. Kane Williamson has already scored 481 runs this Cricket World Cup, and would look to cross the 500 mark. 2019 New Zealand’s bowling has really saved them the whole WC with Trent Boult taking wickets with the ball. Boult has already struck 15 wickets this world cup. James Neesham has shown intent with both bat and ball and is one of the most crucial players for NZ. Neesham has scored 201 runs and taken 11 wickets already, he would definitely like to better his stats.
India on the other side have been dependent on their top order, with Rohit Sharma hitting 5 centuries already this world cup. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul have looked to succesfully play the role of building the innings. Rohit Sharma has scored 647 runs from 9 matches this World Cup. Virat Kohli has anchored the innings, scoring 5 consecutive half centuries. He has scored 442 runs this World Cup, he would also be eyeing the 500 runs mark. Kohli would also be keeping in mind that he is yet to score a century this world cup. Jasprit Bumrah has been India’s star bowler this world cup, bowling economical spells and taking 17 wickets this world cup. The Indian Cricket Team has the services of one of the best all rounders in the world, Hardik Pandya who has scored 194 runs this world cup and also taken 9 wickets.
It is worth understanding that India may have slight edge over New Zealand but they cannot take them lightly looking back at what happened in the warmup game.
Semi Final 2- England vs Australia:
The star studded match between rivals England and Australia is set to take place on 11 July in Birmingham. Both the teams have been named as favourites since the start of the tournament. It is worth analyzing how these two teams stack up against each other.
England has faced alot of upsets this WC, first losing to Pakistan and then to Sri Lanka. However, England has regained his momentum after they beat India and New Zealand convincingly and qualifying for the semi finals. England has a strong top order whereas the middle order has looked shaky in some games. https://alleysport.com/2019/07/06/top-world-cup-moments/
Jonny Bairstow has scored 462 runs this world cup, opening for England and has been quite consistent. Joe Root has also held the innings together and has scored 500 runs in 9 matches. Root’s wicket can be a big game changer in England vs Australia. England’s star allrounder Ben Stokes has played exceptionally well this world cup as he scored 381 runs in 9 matches and took 7 wickets too. Ben Stokes has gained a lot of form after a miserable form. Woakes on the other side has been decent with the ball and has taken 9 wickets.
They have completely dominated this world cup and finished 2nd in the points table after the league stage. Strong opening partnerships by David Warner and Aaron Finch have seen Australia build a decent total. Warner has scored 638 runs in 9 matches whereas Finch has scored 507 runs. Scoring more than 1000 runs combined, this opening pair has looked the most deadly this world cup. It will be a challenge for England to break the challenge at the earliest. Australia’s bowling has also been one of the best this world cup. Starc and Cummins have together struck 39 wickets combined this world cup and batsmen have really found it difficult to get hold of them.
Now, it would be interesting to see how both these games take shape and what is the end result. We hope we get to see a good match in both of them.
