Arsenal vs Newcastle Preview

The Gunners played against Newcastle last week, albeit in the FA Cup 3rd round, and after the two teams were unable to break the deadlock in 90 minutes, the game went to extra time. Arsenal youngster Emile Smith-Rowe and Gunners captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang found the back of the next in extra time, sending last year’s FA Cup champions through to the next round of the competition.

On the other hand, Steve Bruce’s Newcastle suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of bottom-of-the-league Sheffield United, who incidentally won their first match in the league this season. Substitute Ryan Fraser, who was brought on by Steve Bruce to get his team a goal did the opposite, by conceding a penalty and getting himself an early bath. Sheffield United’s Billy Sharp slotted away from the spot to give all 3 points to the Blades. The red card means that Fraser will not be playing in the match against Arsenal.

Arsenal vs Newcastle Preview: H2H (Head-to-Head)

Arsenal and Newcastle United have played each other 185 times, the North London club have had the upper hand, winning 80 of those matches, while the Magpies have won 67. The two teams have shared the spoils 38 times. Historically, Arsenal have been the better team and thus can be counted as favourites for the next encounter, as the match will be played at their home.

More recently, Newcastle have struggled against the Gunners. In the last 10 years, Newcastle have beaten Arsenal only once, a 2-1 at the St. James’ Park in 2017/18 season. Arsenal’s only goal in that game was scored by current striker Lacazette. In the past decade, Arsenal have beat Newcastle 16 times across competitions, drawn 2 and lost just the one time. The last time Arsenal lost to Newcastle at Emirates Stadium was in 2010. Since then, the Magpies haven’t been able to defeat the Gunners in 9 trips to London.

Arteta would want to continue recent tradition by picking up all 3 points at home against Newcastle, helping Arsenal as they try to salvage their season by finishing in the European qualification places.
