Arsenal vs Newcastle, Match Preview

The Gunners have revived their season somewhat, recovering from their EFL Cup Quarter-final exit at the hands of Manchester City, by defeating rivals Chelsea and picking 3 points against Brighton and West Brom in the Premier League. These results seem to have halted Arsenal’s free fall down the league table, where they were as low as 16th at a point.

Arteta would want to see a reaction from his players and the FA Cup and Europa League present opportunities for Arsenal to change the narrative about their season so far.

Their opponents Newcastle have had a horror run in the last few games. The Magpies lost to Leicester City and Manchester City, drew with Liverpool and were knocked out of the EFL Cup by championship side Brentford.

Steve Bruce would want to put an end to his team’s recent poor form by causing an upset at the Emirates Stadium. Before the FA Cup clash, the Magpies are scheduled to visit Bramall Lane to play Sheffield United in what should be a fairly easy 3 points for Newcastle, considering the implosion at Sheffield United that has put the Blades at the rock bottom of the league.

Arsenal vs Newcastle, Latest Team News

Arsenal have a relatively injury-free squad to choose from for the important FA Cup clash against Newcastle. They might miss summer signing Gabriel, who is an injury doubt. The Brazilian center-back joined from Lille in September and has been a breath of fresh air in a troubled Arsenal defence.

The Gunners have been handed a boost with new signing Thomas Partey apparently ready to feature in the squad after recovering from injury. The Ghanian joined the club from Atletico Madrid toward the end of the summer window and is yet to deliver on his lofty expectations in what has been an injury-curtailed season for him so far. Young attacker Reiss Nelson is also doubtful for the Magpies clash.

Newcastle will be without flamboyant winger Allan Saint-Maximin. They will also miss defenders Jamaal Lascelles and new signing Jamal Lewis, with both the players doubtful for the clash. Midfielder Ryan Fraser is also doubtful due to a groin strain.

Arteta might continue with Bernd Leno in goal, after backup keeper Alex Runnarsson endured a painful 90 minutes against Manchester City in Arsenal’s last cup match. While Calum Chambers has recovered from an ACL injury, Arteta might go with David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi at the heart of defence, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Cedric Soares as full-backs.

Mohamed Elneny could partner Thomas Partey in a double pivot, with Joe Willock slightly ahead of the two. Eddie Nketiah could lead the line with Gabriel Martinelli and club-record signing Nicolas Pepe as wingers.
