AFCON Quarter-Final Predictions & Preview

Nigeria has adapted well to the AFCON this year, and with their main competitors faltering, the Super Eagles have their sights set on winning. Underdogs Angola, who eliminated Algeria, one of the biggest teams in North Africa, in the group round, are preventing them from advancing to the semi-finals.

A sad chapter in Nigerian football history persisted with the Angola vs. Nigeria World Cup qualifier in 1989. According to Afrik Foot, midfielder Samuel Okwaraji fell on the field during the game and died. Nigeria was excluded from the 2006 World Cup by the Angolans. Angola defeated Namibia 3-0. Angola is one of the lower-ranked teams in the competition and has only advanced to the quarterfinals once in the previous 14 years, so they are certainly nothing to laugh at. This, together with Nigeria’s offensive prowess with players like Osimhen, could help the Super Eagles advance to the competition’s semifinals.

After a terrible performance on the group stage, the Elephants were granted a second chance to prove themselves. Under interim coach Emerse Fae, they defeated the reigning champions Senegal, but they will have a much harder battle when they play Mali.

Mali is doing an incredible campaign. In their Round of 16 matchup with Burkina Faso, the Eagles dominated, therefore Ivory Coast will face tough competition. Nonetheless, taking into account their lacklustre performances in the group stage, Ivory Coast’s victory over the favourites and reigning champs is an amazing accomplishment.

In the 2019 AFCON, Mali was defeated by Egypt. Having defeated Senegal (4-5) on penalties, the tournament hosts emerged victorious from the verge of elimination and now sit only two games shy of the championship match. Mali, who has won every game at AFCON 2023 and defeated Burkina Faso 2-1 to go to the quarterfinals, will be a tough challenge for them. The favourites are the Ivory Coast in this match.

Both their Round of 16 matchup with Egypt and all of their Group F matches ended in draws for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Leopards have scored in all but one of their games, yet they have only preserved one clean sheet. In the meanwhile, Senegal is the only team Guinea has lost against in the competition.

Senegal found it difficult to score points against a 10-man Equatorial Guinea team in the Round of 16. They advanced thanks to a last-minute goal from Mohamed Bayo. Serhou Guirassy, their main player, is still getting used to life in Ivory Coast, but he must step up to the plate against DR Congo. Read the AFCON Quarter-Final Predictions till the end.

The last time Guinea defeated the two-time AFCON winners was in 2004. There will probably be a tie in this match. On penalties, the Democratic Republic of Congo will prevail. With a surprising 2-0 victory against the Atlas Lions in the round of 16, the Bafana Bafana upset tournament favourites Morocco.

Now, they want to improve on their 2019 AFCON quarterfinal elimination. The undefeated Cape Verde team, who defeated Mauritania 1-0 in the Round of 16, will take against the 1996 winners. For the first time in their history, South Africa has maintained three clean sheets at the AFCON.

It will be thrilling and fascinating to see these two teams play since they have played the finest football in the competition. Against the Blue Sharks, South Africa last triumphed in 2005. They will need to maintain this defensive stability to overcome the Blue Sharks, who are without a doubt the tournament’s underdogs. Although it will be close, we think Bafana Bafana will prevail in the end.
